Journal, annual sermons and reports of the SPG, 1701-1870
Part 7 of the BOA series: British records on the Atlantic World, 1700-1900. Whereas the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel's missionary work in the West Indies began as early as 1712, the greater part of its resources throughout the 18th century were concentrated in Britain's colonies in pre-revolutionary America and provide, along with the collection of American material in the archives of the USPG, 1635-1812, an often unique source of first-hand information on its social and political history. The first mission to the Gold Coast of Africa came in 1752, with significant separate series on Asia generally, and India in particular, not appearing in the Society's archive until around 1815. |
